AOL is on a product-cutting spree. In addition to the shuttering of XDrive, AOL Pictures, MyMobile And Bluestring, the company will also be shutting down the AOL Video Uploads service starting this week, says Michael Arlington on TechCrunch. AOL is recommending that users transfer videos to Motionbox, a New York based video sharing and editing startup that we first covered in 2006. (more…)

Online consumers intend to spend less in stores this holiday season than last year, The Conference Board and TNS report, but slightly more online. Consumers will be expecting free shipping and deals not available in stores when they shop online. The Consumer Internet Barometer, a quarterly report produced by The Conference Board, the global business research and membership organization, and TNS, a global market insight and information group, surveys 10,000 households across the country and tracks who’s doing what on the Internet. A woman is divorcing her husband after discovering his Secon Life character was having an affair with a virtual woman in the fantasy world. Amy Taylor, 28, said her three-year marriage to David Pollard, 40, came to an end when she twice walked in on him watching his online character, Dave Barmy, “having sex with other virtual women”. AUSTRALIA’S mandatory net filter is being primed to block 10,000 websites as part of a blacklist of unspecified “unwanted content”. Some 1300 websites have already been identified by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. Communications Minister Senator Conroy revealed details of the Rudd Government’s proposed web filter as he called for expressions of interest from internet service providers (ISPs) for a live trial of the technology, the Courier-Mail reports. Ninety-eight percent of iPhone subscribers use at least one mobile data service according to market research firm The Nielsen Company’s Q3 2008 U.S. iPhone Executive Overview. Seventy percent of iPhone users listen to audio tracks on their device, with 39 percent downloading music directly to the handset–66 percent of users download software and applications, and 35 percent screen video content, which Nielsen says makes them seven times as likely as the typical mobile subscriber. Twitter, the wildly popular microblogging service, may be forced to charge companies for access to its users, founder Evan Williams told Bloomberg News. Williams, who recently replaced Jack Dorsey as CEO, said he wanted to start weaning the company off venture capital, especially as the economic climate sours. (more…)
