A study published by the Austrian government identified serious health threats of genetically engineered (GE) crops. In one of the very few long-term feeding studies ever conducted with GE crops, the fertility of mice fed with GE maize was found to be severely impaired, with fewer offspring being produced than by mice fed on natural crops.

After de miserable failure of voice dialling apps in our mobile phones and voice commands for our PC’s, this time Yahoo says it has a new technology: mobile voice search for our cell phones. “It’s not perfect, but Yahoo’s voice-powered search tech is worth using. It’s a sign of things to come as phones and wireless networks improve”, according to CNet.

Google.org announced $10.25 million in investments in a breakthrough energy technology called Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), which expands the potential of geothermal energy by orders of magnitude. Google’s Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal initiative focuses on solar thermal power, advanced wind, EGS and other potential breakthrough technologies. (more…)

Service provider Worldmax has launched what it claims is Europe’s first network based on mobile WiMAX technology, reports Reuters. The network - currently offering mobile broadband connection via PCs only, as WiMAX-enabled handsets are not yet available - initially covers the city centre of Amsterdam but plans to extend across the Netherlands in coming years. Alcatel-Lucent helped build the network, with backing from Intel and Greenfield Capital. (more…)

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her British counterpart David Miliband, visited Silicon Valley to tour various companies and meet with tech industry leaders. One was Google, and at the Googleplex Rice and Miliband emerged from their “fireside chat” with googlers and addressed the media for a brief 10 minutes. (more…)

Singapore will host the world’s first fully 3-D based film and entertainment technology festival taking place November 19 - 23, 2008. The Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) will host the festival officially named “3DX: 3D Film & Entertainment Technology Festival.” Jim Chabin of 3D Partners Ltd. will serve as 3DX executive producer of the five-day event taking place in Asia. The festival is supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). (more…)
