  • Mobile lifts AT&T profits

    US telecoms operator AT&T reported a 22% rise in first quarter profits today thanks to strong growth in its mobile business, which offset a slowdown in its fixed-line division. Total company profits hit US$3.5 billion - up from US$2.85 billion a year ago - which meant the company earned US$0.74 per share after non-recurring charges, in line with analyst estimates. Revenues grew 6% from a year ago to US$30.7 billion but this figure masked a dramatic shift in the company’s business lines. Fixed-line revenue fell 7.1 percent to US$9.7 billion, while revenue from its mobile division increased 17.1 percent to US$10.6 billion. Data revenue rose 6 percent to US$6.2 billion. This revenue split meant that almost all the company’s profit in the quarter came from its mobile business. (more…)
