The worldwide mobile phone market continued solid double-digit growth in the second quarter (2Q08) as competition in high-end devices heated up. According to IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 306.0 million units, an increase of 5.6% from the 289.7 million units shipped during the previous quarter and up 15.3% from the 265.4 million units shipped during 2Q07. Total shipments for the quarter were in line with IDC’s expectations, even as vendors cited economic challenges and changing demands within key regions.

Worldwide spending on Internet advertising will total $65.2 billion in 2008, which represents nearly 10% of all ad spending across all media. With IDC’s Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast projecting 15-20% annual growth throughout the forecast period, this share will reach 13.6% by 2011 as Internet ad spending grows to $106.6 billion worldwide.

A new IDC report predicts that over the long term and certainly in next-generation devices, Linux will be a player and it won’t have to capture market share from incumbents to be successful. “The Linux market continues to behave like a relatively young, highly dynamic industry and continues to reinvent itself as customer adoption activities become more mainstream and widespread. Linux cannot be underestimated in terms of overall market impact going forward,“ said Melissa Martin, senior market analyst, enterprise end-user programmes at IDC.

The Romanian PC market grew sharply year on year in the fourth quarter of 2007 in terms of both shipments and value. According to the latest data from IDC, while unit shipments jumped almost 70%, the value of the market nearly doubled compared to the same period of the previous year. The fastest-growing segment was for notebooks, which increased 160% year on year and 133% quarter on quarter in volume between September and December 2007, accounting for almost 40% of the market.

Factory revenue in the worldwide server market grew 2.4% year over year to $15.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2007 (4Q07), marking the seventh consecutive quarter of positive growth. Worldwide server unit shipments grew 9.0% in 4Q07 when compared with the year-ago period. For the full year 2007, worldwide server revenue grew 3.6% to $54.4 billion, while worldwide unit shipments grew 6.7% to 8.0 million units. This represents the highest annual server revenue since the market peaked in 2000 with factory revenue of more than $61.6 billion, says IDC Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker.
Volume systems revenue grew 8.2% year over year and the segment continues to be the catalyst for growth in the server market overall, gaining favor with SMB and enterprise customers alike. Midrange enterprise server revenue experienced negative growth for the fourth consecutive quarter, declining –0.5% year over year while the high-end enterprise server market had similar results with –5.7% year-over-year revenue growth.

IDC says worldwide PC shipments grew by 15.5% in the fourth quarter of 2007 (4Q07), EMEA tops growth with 20% increase and other markets also performed well too - United States 8.8% , also stong results in Japan and Latin America. On an annual basis, total shipments reached 269.0 million units in 2007 with growth of 14.3%. HP took the top spot with volume of over 50.5 million, with Dell in second with volume of 40.0 million. Acer moved into third with volume of 21.2 million excluding Gateway’s business for the first three quarters and 24.6 million including Gateway, followed by Lenovo with 20.2 million.
