Intel and Samsung– two companies that supply a lot of chips to the computer industry– remain the top semiconductor suppliers, but chip-makers that supply to cell phone makers are moving up in the ranking. “A couple companies that showed some of the strongest growth last year and in the first quarter were Qualcomm and Broadcom in terms of percentage growth,” says Brian Matas, vice president of research for IC Insights in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Intel unveiled a new design of the Intel-powered classmate PC today at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai. As announced in a keynote by Andrew Chien, Intel vice president, Corporate Technology Group and director of Intel Research, the second-generation Intel-powered classmate PC is an affordable, fully functional, rugged Internet-centric computer platform. These simple-to-use PCs have wireless capability, longer battery life, water resistant keyboards and are more shock resistant if dropped. Intel is calling this category of PCs “netbooks.”

Intel will roll out its first wave of mainstream 45-nanometer chips, the Centrino 2 (Montevina) mobile processors by June then follow this up in September with additional chips including the first quad-core mobile processor. The new chips, branded Centrino 2, will offer the option of integrated Wi-Fi and WiMax wireless technologies.

Unable to extend it’s monopoly on OLPC laptops and to push Microsoft in the 100 dollars laptop, Intel quits the humanitarian project blaming “philosophical differences” with the board. One laptop per child foundation had the vision to change people’s life in poor counties by providing cheap laptops that can be used for education. Intel first tried to compete with Classmate PC and when it failed it tried to “buy ” it’s wy onto OLPC board. Some people still think it’s a blow to OLPC the fact that Intel quit. B…S!
