Nokia phone shows a blinking message icon

I recently tested Nokia N85 and Nokia N96 phones and both showed in the top-right corner a small message icon, But when you go to Messaging there is no new SMS or MMS, so I was clueless. Checking online I saw many people asking the same question: what means the blinking message icon??
