OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte unveiled the design for the foundation’s second-generation laptop, which isn’t really a laptop at all but a double-screened, fold-up electronic book. Negroponte says the cost of this 2nd-generation device, which uses dual-touch screens with 16:9 aspect ratios, will be kept to $75.

Unable to extend it’s monopoly on OLPC laptops and to push Microsoft in the 100 dollars laptop, Intel quits the humanitarian project blaming “philosophical differences” with the board. One laptop per child foundation had the vision to change people’s life in poor counties by providing cheap laptops that can be used for education. Intel first tried to compete with Classmate PC and when it failed it tried to “buy ” it’s wy onto OLPC board. Some people still think it’s a blow to OLPC the fact that Intel quit. B…S!

Last week, media was buzzing with the fact that Microsoft and Intel are “hostile” to OLPC and want eighter to bury the laptop or put their products inside. Today Wall Street Journal says that Microsoft will test XP on OLPC in some countries, and this is presented like it’s something very important. Well, it’s not! Microsoft is doing to OLPC what it knows best. Probably Netscape, Real Networks and others can tell you more about it… Sun will keep quiet cause they got about 2 bln. dollars from Microsoft… They only have to put Intel processor inside and call it a Classmate and it’s done.

Peru government sees the opportunity, and the first order is 260.000 OLPC XO laptops. This came after Nick’s Foundation sold 100.000 laptops to Uruguay and a few thousand went on Give 1 Get 1 program.

The One Laptop per Child project’s “Give One, Get One” program has been extended through Dec. 31 as donations averaged about $2 million a day. On that pace, the OLPC should move about 490,000 units by the end of the year, says Larry Dignan on ZDnet Blogs.
