Alvarion has been chosen by Malta’s GO Mobile for a nationwide mobile WiMAX network deployment. Using Alvarion’s 4Motion solution with BreezeMAX as its RAN, GO Mobile plans to provide voice and data services in the 3.5GHz frequency band to its customers.

Service provider Worldmax has launched what it claims is Europe’s first network based on mobile WiMAX technology, reports Reuters. The network - currently offering mobile broadband connection via PCs only, as WiMAX-enabled handsets are not yet available - initially covers the city centre of Amsterdam but plans to extend across the Netherlands in coming years. The WAP 450 access point uses the recently announced 4G common broadband base control unit. Motorola said the WAP 450 has a smaller common equipment cabinet and a more powerful tower-top RF module that can improve coverage and capacity by delivering up to 10 watts of power output per sector at the antenna port. The 10 watts of power at the antenna port in WAP 450 is comparable to 20 watts or more power of a traditional ground base station, which typically looses half of its power in the RF cables. (more…)

Blogs are buzz-ing with a new rumor: finnish phone maker is planning a WiMAX version of it’s N810 Internet Tablet. This will be launched at US expo CTIA, on April 1st. The new one has a QWERTY keyboard and video camera. No official announcements yet. April 1st must be a good choice in case this rumor turns to be just that ![]()

Intel will roll out its first wave of mainstream 45-nanometer chips, the Centrino 2 (Montevina) mobile processors by June then follow this up in September with additional chips including the first quad-core mobile processor. The new chips, branded Centrino 2, will offer the option of integrated Wi-Fi and WiMax wireless technologies. (more…)

Romanian government approved the new legislation regarding opening the 3600 - 3800 MHz spectrum for WiMAX services. Some 30 days from now the telecom regulator, ANRCTI, willset the price for a licence and operators cand begin fighting for it. (more…)

Agilent Technologies introduced new Interactive Functional Test (IFT) software for realistically testing “user experience” by stress testing cellular mobile devices in real-world network scenarios. By allowing earlier identification of design issues and reducing time to market, this software is ideal for UMTS mobile phone/device developers conducting functional validation, as well as service providers performing acceptance testing. Motorola, a leading provider of wireless broadband solutions, today issued a year-end update on its wi4 WiMAX solutions and customer engagements. During 2007 Motorola increased to 15 its number of contracts for commercial WiMAX networks and demonstrated the historic first live mobile WiMAX 802.16e handoffs between continuous WiMAX cells supporting voice, data and multimedia applications during WiMAX World USA in Chicago.
