Who is going to replace Jerry Yang?

After Jerry Yang announced it will step down as chief executive as soon as the board finds a replacement, shares went up 4 percent on hopes his departure will clear the way for a deal with Microsoft. Yang tried to carve an independent strategy for Yahoo and was blamed when Microsoft Corp walked away from an offer to buy the company earlier this year.   • Rumors: Apple to buy Yahoo

    More than a couple of sites posted this rumors: Apple might be intrested to buy Yahoo, more than Microsoft is. Well, it’s a nice idea, and the plan might work. But I believe it’s only an idea, not an actual plan. Steve Jobs is more intrested in launching new products than to buy something, like we saw in the last years. And right now I can’t imagine what are they working on: a Qwerty phone? a Mac NetBook? a digital home / smart home system? Maybe a video game console… (more…)

    Never a publication to mince its words, The Economist flatly states that Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang must go. In fact, the business journal goes so far to say that Yang should have never re-assumed the role of CEO in the first place. “A mistake it clearly was,” the report says, “and it is time for Mr. Yang and Yahoo’s shareholders to say so.” (more…)

  • GMail adds videoconferencing

    World’s most popular Internet search engine, Google, is adding videoconferencing features to its Gmail e-mail service to lure users from Yahoo or Hotmail. Users can chat for free using Gmail by installing a small add-on program to their browser, Google said today in a statement. Those without a Webcam can use an audio chat option. (more…)

  • After de miserable failure of voice dialling apps in our mobile phones and voice commands for our PC’s, this time Yahoo says it has a new technology: mobile voice search for our cell phones. “It’s not perfect, but Yahoo’s voice-powered search tech is worth using.   • A permanent Google/Yahoo partnership raises serious concerns for consumers and businesses. In our view, Google’s dominance of online search and advertising has already reached a tipping point. A deal with #2 rival Yahoo! would allow the company to lockup over 90% share of search (sponsored text) advertising market. If Google/Yahoo! deal becomes business-as-usual, Google would have garnered nearly all of the search advertising market. Moreover, since some claim that Google’s ads earn nearly twice as much as other advertising programs, Google’s actual market share, based on revenue, is likely higher than widely reported.
